Abraham Duquesne, Marquis (1610-1688), a renowned French naval commander, is depicted in this striking portrait. Born in Rouen, Normandy, Duquesne began his military career as a soldier in the Spanish army before joining the French navy in 1643. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1647 and a rear-admiral in 1656. Duquesne's greatest achievements came during the Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678), where he commanded the French fleet in the Battle of Solebay in 1672 and the Battle of Texel in 1673. In the former, despite being outnumbered, Duquesne managed to repel the English fleet, saving the French army from destruction. In the latter, he successfully defended the Dutch city of Texel against a combined English and Dutch assault. Duquesne's military prowess earned him the title of Marquis in 1674. However, his successes were not without controversy. In 1678, he was removed from his command after a disagreement with Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the French Minister of Finance and Navy. Duquesne was later reinstated in 1682, but he died in 1688 before he could take command of the French fleet again. This portrait captures Duquesne in his prime, with a confident and determined expression.
