EDITORS COMMENTS
Adelaide Eugenie Louise d'Orleans, born on February 24, 1753, was a French princess and the wife of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who later became known as Louis Philippe II, Egalité. She was the eldest daughter of Louis Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, and Louise Marie Adelaide de Bourbon. Adelaide's childhood was marked by the political turmoil of the French Revolution. Her father, a prominent figure in the French monarchy, was executed during the Reign of Terror in 1793. Adelaide and her family were forced to flee France and seek refuge in Switzerland. Despite the challenges of her early years, Adelaide went on to marry Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, in 1773. The marriage produced ten children, including the future King Louis-Philippe of France. Adelaide was known for her intelligence, grace, and devotion to her family. She played an important role in the education and upbringing of her children and was a patron of the arts. After the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1814, Adelaide and her family returned to France. She continued to live a prominent life at the French court, serving as a confidante and advisor to her son, King Louis-Philippe. Adelaide died on December 17, 1821, at the age of 68. She is remembered as a devoted mother and a strong and influential figure in French history. This beautiful portrait of Adelaide Eugenie Louise d'Orleans captures her regal beauty and elegance. The painting, likely created during her time in exile in Switzerland, is a testament to the resilience and grace of this remarkable woman. Despite the challenges she faced, Adelaide remained dedicated to her family and played a significant role in shaping the future of France.
