This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) and the Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata), two fascinating species of birds captured in intricate detail. The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturalisie: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) published in Paris, France, between 1816 and 1830. The African Sacred Ibis, indigenous to the Nile Valley, was revered in ancient Egypt as a sacred bird and a symbol of the god Thoth. This bird, with its distinctive downward-curved beak and long, slender legs, is depicted standing gracefully on the left side of the print. On the right side of the print, the Eurasian Curlew, with its long, downward-curved beak and distinctive 'wader' appearance, is shown in a more naturalistic setting. This bird, which can be found in Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa, is known for its distinctive call, which sounds like a mournful wail. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art is an excellent example of the high-quality illustrations produced during the golden age of natural history publishing in Europe.
