12th Alfons Alfonso Alphonse Castile Conquest Galicia Galician Hispania Iberian Jimenez Leon Peninsula Toledo

EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfons VI of Leon and Castile, also known as Alfonso or Alphonse the Brave or the Valiant, is depicted in this stunning 12th-century engraving. Born in 1040, Alfons was the son of Veremund of León and Sancha of Castile. He ascended to the throne of León in 1072 and later, in 1075, he conquered Toledo, the former capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, marking the beginning of the Christian Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula. Alfons VI is considered one of the greatest kings of the Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula. He expanded his territories, which included Galicia, León, and Castile, and was known for his military prowess and his patronage of the arts and sciences. This engraving, which features Alfons in regal attire and a crown, highlights his status as a powerful monarch. The image is richly colored, adding depth and vibrancy to the intricate details of the engraving. The background is adorned with geometric patterns and foliage, further emphasizing the grandeur of the king and the artistic skill of the engraver. Alfons VI ruled until his death in 1109, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the history of Europe. His conquests paved the way for the eventual unification of the Iberian Peninsula under Christian rule, and his patronage of the arts and sciences contributed to the cultural development of the region. This engraving serves as a testament to his bravery and the impact he had on European history.
