EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Alfred Saker (1814-1880), an English missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the word of God in the Cameroons region of West Africa. Saker is considered one of the most influential missionaries in African history, and his translation of the Bible into the Duala language played a pivotal role in spreading Christianity throughout the region. Born in England in 1814, Saker arrived in West Africa in 1847 as part of the Church Missionary Society. He quickly gained a reputation for his dedication to the people of the Cameroons, learning their language and customs, and building strong relationships with local leaders. In 1855, Saker completed the translation of the New Testament into Duala, and in 1861, he finished the Old Testament. This achievement was a significant milestone in the history of Christian missionary work in Africa, as it allowed the gospel to be shared in a language that the people could understand and relate to. Saker's influence extended beyond the realm of religion. He was also an advocate for fair trade and worked to improve the living conditions of the people in the Cameroons. Livingstone, the famous explorer and missionary, considered Saker to be one of the most influential missionaries in West Africa. This photograph, taken in an uncertain year, captures Saker in later life, with a wise and thoughtful expression on his face. The image is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of this remarkable man, who dedicated his life to bringing the light of the gospel and the benefits of Western civilization to the people of the Cameroons.
