An animal wounded in one of its forelegs is being assisted to the ambulance wagon by four men supporting it with a blanket under its belly while another is leading it. EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a poignant moment during World War One, showcasing the vital role of the Canadian Mounted Veterinary Corps in providing medical aid to wounded horses on the battlefield. Amidst the chaos and destruction, brave men from the Mounted Section are seen tirelessly rescuing injured horses in the firing line of field artillery. In this particular scene, a group of four compassionate soldiers can be observed carefully supporting an animal with a blanket under its belly, while another soldier leads it towards an ambulance wagon. The horse's foreleg injury is evident, highlighting the immense suffering these noble creatures endured during wartime. The wounded horses receive immediate first aid before being transported to a Base Veterinary Hospital for further treatment. However, if their injuries prove too severe and recovery seems impossible, these dedicated veterinarians make the heart-wrenching decision to humanely end their suffering. Dated back to 1916, this photograph serves as a testament to both human compassion and sacrifice amidst one of history's most devastating conflicts. It reminds us that war not only affects humans but also innocent animals who play crucial roles in military operations. Through this image captured by Mary Evans Prints Online, we are reminded of the bravery displayed by those who risked their lives on behalf of our equine allies – ensuring they received much-needed care even amidst chaotic battlefields.
