America. To perpetuate to posterity the memory of those patriotic heroes, who fought, bled & died in establishing peace, liberty & tranquility to their country. Amos Doolittles print after Robert Edge Pines design appears to be an enlarged copy of Strutts engraving (1781-1). It follows the original in most details, except for the figure in the medallion on the pyramid. In the Strutt version the figure seems to be Minerva and holds an unidentifiable object in each hand (possibly an owl in her left hand). In Doolittles version the figure holds a pole with liberty cap in her left hand and a key in her right. Date 1781. America. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "America," is a tribute to the patriotic heroes who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of peace, liberty, and tranquility for their country. The print, designed by Robert Edge Pine and enlarged by Amos Doolittle in 1781, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the formative years of American history. The design closely resembles Strutt's engraving of the same year, with a few notable differences. In the original, the figure in the pyramid's medallion is depicted as Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, holding an unidentifiable object in each hand. However, in Doolittle's version, the figure holds a pole topped with a liberty cap in her left hand and a key in her right. This subtle change emphasizes the importance of liberty and the role it played in the founding of the American nation. The pyramid, adorned with the thirteen stars and stripes, symbolizes the unity and strength of the newly formed United States. The eagle, perched atop the pyramid, represents the power and might of the American people. The sun rising over the horizon in the background signifies the hope and optimism that came with the dawn of a new era. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the founding fathers and the early American patriots, ensuring their memory lives on for generations to come.
