EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrée Josseline Carron (1898-1976), the radiant and elegant young woman depicted in this portrait, was on the brink of an extraordinary journey into the world of royalty and international diplomacy. Just a few weeks before this photograph was taken, Andrée, a French-born artist, had accepted the proposal of marriage from His Highness Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III, the 48th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. The union took place in December 1929, making Andrée Begum (Queen) Aga Khan. Born in Paris, Andrée was the daughter of a French father and an English mother. Her artistic talents were evident from a young age, and she studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts. Her artistic prowess would later be showcased in the design of the Aga Khan Palace in Mumbai, India, which she and the Aga Khan III commissioned in the 1930s. Their union produced one son, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, who would later become a prominent diplomat and humanitarian. However, the marriage ended in divorce in 1943. Despite the separation, Andrée remained an influential figure in the Aga Khan community and continued to support various charitable causes. This photograph, taken just prior to her marriage, captures Andrée's youthful beauty and the excitement of her impending royal role. The image is a testament to the unique and fascinating intersection of art, culture, and history that defines the life of Begum Aga Khan, Andrée Josseline Carron.
