Andrew Willet (1562-1621), a prominent and controversial figure in English church history, is depicted in this intriguing portrait. Willet was born in Suffolk, England, and educated at Cambridge University, where he became a fellow of Emmanuel College. He was ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1588, but his religious convictions soon led him into conflict with the authorities. Willet was an ardent Puritan, advocating for reforms within the Church of England. He was particularly critical of the use of imagery in worship, which was a source of controversy during this period. In 1593, he published a book, "A Rule and Exhortation to Godly Living," which contained a scathing attack on the use of images in churches. This earned him the wrath of the ecclesiastical authorities, and he was summoned to appear before the Bishop of London. Despite this, Willet continued to write and publish works advocating for reform within the Church of England. In 1604, he published a translation of the works of the Dutch Reformer, Peter Datheen, which contained a strong critique of the Church of England's liturgy. This earned him a second summons before the Bishop of London, and he was suspended from his living. Despite the challenges he faced, Willet remained committed to his beliefs. He continued to write and publish, and in 1612, he was appointed as a chaplain to King James I. He died in London in 1621.
