EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of triumph in a small Ethiopian village during the Italian-Ethiopian War of 1935. The man at the center, with a determined look in his eyes, summons the people with the powerful beats of a drum. The announcement of victories in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, has reached this remote community, bringing hope and jubilation to its residents. The scene is set against the backdrop of a rural Italian landscape, with the rolling hills and sunlit fields reflecting the optimism and pride of the Ethiopian people. The use of a drum as a means of communication underscores the importance of community and the power of collective action. The Italian invasion of Ethiopia, also known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, began in October 1935 and lasted until May 1936. Ethiopia, the only African country to never be colonized, was a symbol of African pride and sovereignty. The Italian fascist regime, led by Benito Mussolini, sought to expand its colonial empire and assert its dominance in Africa. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Ethiopian army and people put up a fierce resistance, inflicting heavy casualties on the Italian forces. The eventual Italian victory came at a great cost, with an estimated 100,000 Ethiopian civilians and soldiers killed. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of the Ethiopian people during a time of war and occupation. The announcement of victories, however small and local, brought hope and unity to the community and strengthened their resolve to fight for their freedom and sovereignty.
