EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stoic gaze of two Apache native American Indian braves, taken during the last war between the Apache people and the United States Army in the late 1880s. The image was made in the borderlands between Southern Arizona in the United States and Northern Sonora in Old Mexico, around 1887. The Apache, a group of indigenous peoples with a rich cultural history, had been fighting against encroachment on their lands by European settlers and the US military for decades. By the late 19th century, the Apache had been pushed into the desert regions of the Southwest, and the US government sought to remove them from their traditional territories. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these brave warriors during a time of great upheaval and change. The two men are dressed in traditional Apache clothing, adorned with beads, feathers, and other decorations. Their serious expressions and direct gaze suggest a deep sense of pride and determination in the face of adversity. The photograph was made during the Apache Wars, a series of conflicts between the Apache and the US military that lasted from the late 1860s to the early 1880s. The war ended with the surrender of the last major Apache resistance, led by Geronimo, in 1886. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and courage of the Apache people in the face of colonialism and displacement. The photograph is a valuable historical document, offering insights into the lives of the Apache people during a time of great change and upheaval. It is a poignant reminder of the complex and often tragic history of indigenous peoples in the American Southwest and their ongoing struggle for self-determination and recognition.
