EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases two significant historical artifacts from ancient Rome, the Column of Trajan and the Theodosius Obelisk, housed in the Forum of Trajan in Rome, Italy. The Column of Trajan, completed in 113 AD, commemorates the Roman Emperor Trajan's military campaigns against the Dacians, specifically the Third Dacian War (85-86 AD) and the First and Second Dorian Wars (86-87 AD). The relief on the column depicts Roman legionaries in the turtle formation, a defensive tactic where soldiers interlock their shields to create a protective barrier, as they attack a city. The Theodosius Obelisk, erected in 390 AD during the Late Antique period, stands proudly behind the column. This ancient Egyptian obelisk was originally transported to Rome as a trophy of victory from the Egyptian city of Thebes. The intricate carvings on both the Column of Trajan and the Theodosius Obelisk are prime examples of the artistic mastery of the Early Roman Empire. Apollodorus of Damascus, a renowned historian and geographer, is believed to have played a significant role in the transportation of the obelisk to Rome. He documented the engineering feat in his work, "The Library," providing valuable historical information about the event. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of ancient Rome, showcasing the military prowess, architectural innovation, and artistic achievements of the time.
