First Lesson in the Goose Step

A small scrawny goose leading Germen troops, in a goose-stepping lesson. Heath Robinson produced a large number of drawings for the Sketch during World War I, poking fun at the German army and showing a lighter side to war. The goose in the picture is similar to a small bird which regularly appeared as a kind of personal signature in Heath Robinson drawings during the early part of his career. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featuring mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popular. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historical print, titled "First Lesson in the Goose Step, " we are transported back to World War I, where renowned artist Heath Robinson masterfully combines fantasy and satire. The image showcases a small and scrawny goose fearlessly leading German troops in a comical goose-stepping lesson. With his signature touch of whimsy, Robinson injects humor into the somber topic of war. During this tumultuous period, Robinson's drawings for publications like the Sketch provided much-needed levity amidst the gravity of conflict. His portrayal of a diminutive bird as the unlikely instructor adds an element of surprise and charm to the scene. This particular goose bears resemblance to those that frequently appeared as personal signatures in Robinson's early works. Robinson's popularity soared due to his weekly contributions featuring mind-boggling contraptions and imaginative designs. However, it is through pieces like "First Lesson in the Goose Step" that he truly showcased his versatility as an artist. This remarkable print is courtesy of Mrs J. C. Robinson/Pollinger Ltd/ILN/Mary Evan’s Prints Online. It offers us a glimpse into history while reminding us that even during times of strife, there can be moments of lightheartedness and laughter.
