The Ashanti War (1873-74) The return from Kumasi, 1874

The return of the British and native troops from their expedition to Kumasi. They are seen here crossing a river. This was sketched during the 2nd Ashanti War (1873-74). In 1873, after decades of an uneasy relationship between the British and the Acing people of central Ghana, the British attacked and virtually destroyed the Asanti capital of Kumasi, and officially declared Ghana a crown colony on 24 July 1874

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative print captures the moment of triumph and relief as British and native troops return from their successful expedition to Kumasi during the Second Ashanti War in 1874. The year was momentous for Ghana, as the British officially declared the region a crown colony on July 24, following decades of an uneasy relationship between the two parties. Tensions had reached a boiling point in 1873 when the British, led by Sir Garnet Wolseley, launched an attack on the Asanti capital of Kumasi. The city was virtually destroyed, and the Asanti people were left reeling from the loss of their capital and the brutalities of war. In this poignant image, we see the troops making their way across a river, having completed their mission to subdue the Asanti resistance. The print, sketched during the war, is an important historical document that bears witness to a pivotal moment in the history of Ghana and the British Empire."
