EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases two exquisite and vibrant tropical birds: the Asian paradise-flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi) and the fire-tailed sunbird (Aethopyga ignicauda). The image is taken from the Victorian-era publication "Beautiful Birds in Far-Off Lands," authored by the esteemed sisters Mary and Elizabeth Kirby. Published by T. Nelson in London in 1872, this book was a popular natural history resource for children, filled with stunning illustrations of exotic birds from around the world. The Asian paradise-flycatcher, depicted on the left, is a medium-sized bird native to Southeast Asia. Known for its striking plumage, the male sports a glossy black head and back, contrasting with its bright orange-red underparts. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued appearance with olive-green upperparts and a yellowish-brown belly. Both sexes have long, graduated tail feathers and distinctive white wing patches. The fire-tailed sunbird, illustrated on the right, is a small, colorful bird native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The male is easily identified by its brilliant orange-red body, black mask, and long, fiery-red tail feathers. The female, while less vibrant, still boasts a striking appearance with a greenish-yellow belly and a black mask. The Kirby sisters' meticulous attention to detail and their dedication to sharing the wonders of the natural world with children make this chromolithograph a valuable historical artifact. The exotic and tropical birds depicted in "Beautiful Birds in Far-Off Lands" continue to captivate and inspire us, reminding us of the rich biodiversity that exists beyond our borders.
