Born on February 24, 1907, in Maryborough, Queensland, Hinkler began his aviation career at a young age. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1922 and quickly distinguished himself as a talented pilot. In 1925, he was selected to join the RAAF's pioneer flying training school, where he excelled in his studies and became an instructor. Hinkler's test pilot career began in earnest in the late 1920s, and he soon gained a reputation as a fearless and skilled aviator. He worked on testing new aircraft designs and engines, pushing the limits of aviation technology and helping to advance the field.
