EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic sight of two iconic British military aircraft, the Avro 683 Lancaster B-1 and the Avro Vulcan B-2, flying in perfect formation over the historic Lincoln Cathedral in the United Kingdom during the 1980s. The Avro Lancaster B-1, registration PA474, is part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. This Lancaster, named City of Lincoln, is a Second World War veteran, having seen active service with 617 Squadron, the famous "Dambusters," during the war. The Avro Vulcan B-2, registration XL317, is also a British military aircraft, having served with the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1993. This Vulcan, which is now preserved in the Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford, was also part of 617 Squadron. The contrast between the urban setting of Lincoln Cathedral and the powerful, piston-propelled machines of the BBMF creates a striking image that transports us back to an era of military aviation history. The Lancaster and Vulcan, both symbols of British military prowess, fly together in this formation, paying tribute to the rich heritage of the Royal Air Force and the brave men and women who have served in its ranks.
