EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a fierce air battle during the historic Battle of Britain, as a damaged Dornier Do-17Z-3 of the German Luftwaffe's 7./ Kampfgeschwader 3 comes crashing down onto the rocky beach of Foreness Point, Isle of Thanet, in England, at 12.55 pm on 26th August 1940. The German bomber, also known as the "Flying Pencil" due to its distinctive shape, had been on an attack mission against West Malling when it was intercepted by a RAF Hawker Hurricane. Upon impact, the aircraft's undercarriage gave way, and the fuselage came to rest on the sandy shore. The crew, consisting of Uffz R Haupt, Pilot-Lt Karl Eggert, Obergefr Walter Knochenmuss, and K Kamm, managed to bail out before the explosion. Uffz R Haupt and Pilot-Lt Eggert survived the crash with shock, but Obergefr Knochenmuss did not make it, and his body was later buried in Margate Cemetery. Kamm also survived the ordeal. The photograph provides a stark reminder of the intense air battles that took place during the Battle of Britain, a pivotal moment in World War II when the fate of the United Kingdom hung in the balance. The image also highlights the inherent danger and risks involved in military aviation during this era, with the exposed legs of one crew member and the bombs still attached to the wings serving as a poignant testament to the violence and destruction of war.
