EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published between 1816 and 1830, showcases two fascinating marine species: the Banded Grunt, Pomadasys furcatus, and the Squirrelfish, Holocentrus ascensionis. The illustration, created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was painstakingly engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in this stunning representation of the Banded Grunt, a tropical reef fish characterized by its distinctive stripes and elongated dorsal fin. The Squirrelfish, named for its bushy dorsal spines, is also depicted with remarkable accuracy. The Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles was a groundbreaking work that aimed to document the natural world through high-quality illustrations. This particular engraving, with its intricate stipple technique, is a testament to the dedication and expertise of its creators. The resulting image is not only a beautiful work of art but also an invaluable resource for scientific research and conservation efforts.
