1872children Babies Began Emigrants Homes Mothers Sending Youth Childrens

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a group of mothers and their young children who were once among the thousands of vulnerable and destitute children sent from Barnardo's Homes in England to new lives in Canada between 1872 and the early 1900s. The image, believed to have been taken around 1914, shows the women and their infants gathered together, their expressions a mix of hope and apprehension as they embark on a new chapter in their lives. Barnardo's, a leading children's charity founded by Dr. Thomas Barnardo in 1867, began sending children to Canada in an effort to provide them with better opportunities and a chance at a brighter future. The organization believed that the fresh air, open spaces, and farming opportunities in Canada would be beneficial for the children's health and development. The children, many of whom had been orphaned, abandoned, or living in poverty, were taken in by Barnardo's and prepared for the journey to Canada. They were given new clothes, vaccinations, and basic education before being sent off on their own or in groups, accompanied by Barnardo's agents or missionaries. Once in Canada, the children were placed in the care of Canadian families, farms, or institutions, where they were expected to work and learn new skills. The experience was often challenging, with many children facing hardships and homesickness, but for many, it provided a chance at a better life. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the thousands of children who were given a new start in life through Barnardo's efforts, and the enduring impact that charitable organizations can have on individuals and communities.
