By September, the movement had reached Frankfurt, where the German National Assembly was in session. The citizens of Frankfurt, frustrated with the slow progress of political reform, took matters into their own hands. On September 18, 1848, a large crowd gathered in the city, determined to force the assembly to act. Armed with makeshift weapons, they constructed barricades in several streets, including Dongesgasse, to prevent the military from intervening.
