1848 Barricade Barricades Frankfurt Storming

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tense moment during the Frankfurt Revolution of 1848, as citizens of Frankfurt storm the barricade in Dongesgasse. The revolution, which began in March 1848, was a series of political upheavals throughout the German states, inspired by the European Spring of Nations. By September, the movement had reached Frankfurt, where the German National Assembly was in session. The citizens of Frankfurt, frustrated with the slow progress of political reform, took matters into their own hands. On September 18, 1848, a large crowd gathered in the city, determined to force the assembly to act. Armed with makeshift weapons, they constructed barricades in several streets, including Dongesgasse, to prevent the military from intervening. The print shows the moment of the assault on the barricade, with men in work clothes and caps, some brandishing sticks and stones, others waving flags, charging forward against the soldiers on the other side. The scene is chaotic, with smoke rising from the barricade and the sound of gunfire ringing in the air. Despite the bravery of the citizens, the revolution ultimately failed. The military, reinforced by Prussian troops, regained control of the city, and the National Assembly was dissolved. The failure of the revolution marked the end of the German Spring of Nations and the beginning of a long period of political instability and repression in Germany. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the determination and courage of the people of Frankfurt during a pivotal moment in German history. It also highlights the complex and often violent nature of political change and the sacrifices that must be made in the pursuit of progress and freedom.
