Bathing pool on Selfridges rooftop

A new Sportapool, a portable swimming bath which could be fitted up at short notice in almost any convenient place. Here it is installed on the roof of Selfridges department store on Oxford Street, London. It claims to have a good depth for diving but I m not convinced! Good name though - full marks to whoever thought that one up. Date: 1931

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Refreshing Rooftop Dip: Selfridges' Portable Bathing Pool in 1930s London" This photograph showcases a unique bathing experience in the heart of London during the 1930s. The image features a portable swimming pool, known as a Sportapool, installed on the rooftop of the iconic Selfridges department store located on Oxford Street. The temporary pool was a novelty that could be set up quickly in any convenient location. The Sportapool boasted a good depth for diving, as evidenced by the confident swimmers seen in the photograph. However, the skeptical expression on the man's face in the foreground hints at doubts about the pool's true depth. Regardless, the name "Sportapool" is undeniably catchy, a testament to the creativity of its creators. The scene is a striking contrast to the bustling streets below, offering a moment of tranquility and relaxation amidst the urban landscape. The swimmers, dressed in stylish swimsuits of the era, seem to be fully immersed in the experience, enjoying the sunshine and the refreshing water. This photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, showcasing the ingenuity and innovation of the time. The temporary rooftop pool at Selfridges was a popular attraction, offering Londoners a chance to escape the city's hustle and bustle for a brief moment of relaxation and fun. The photograph, taken in 1931, is a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the simple pleasure of a rooftop dip could bring joy and excitement to people's lives.
