EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts the pivotal Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, which took place on June 27, 1864, during the American Civil War. The Union Army, led by General William T. Sherman, is shown advancing towards the Confederate lines on Kennesaw Mountain, under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston. The mountainous terrain of Kennesaw Mountain, located in Georgia, presented a significant challenge to both sides, making the battle one of the most fierce and costly engagements of the war. The Union Army's ultimate goal was to capture Atlanta, a key Confederate supply center, and ultimately weaken the Confederacy's military strength. However, the Confederates, well-entrenched on the mountain, were able to repel several Union assaults throughout the day. The battle ended in a stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy losses. This print, created around 1891, captures the intensity and drama of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. The Union soldiers, dressed in their blue uniforms, can be seen advancing up the steep slope of the mountain, while the Confederate soldiers, in their gray uniforms, are shown firing from their entrenched positions. The smoke from the guns and the explosions add to the chaos and confusion of the battlefield. The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain marked a turning point in the Atlanta Campaign and is considered a significant victory for the Confederates. Despite the Union's failure to capture Atlanta, the battle demonstrated the determination and resilience of both armies and their commanders. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers on both sides during the American Civil War.
