EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Waterloo, which took place on June 18, 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium. The painting, unsigned but attributed to William Heath, provides an intricate and detailed account of the decisive clash between the French army, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the allied forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington and Prussian General Blücher. The scene captures the intense and chaotic atmosphere of the battlefield, with soldiers from both sides locked in fierce combat, horses rearing and charging, and the smoke of gunpowder rising into the air. In the foreground, Wellington is shown on horseback, surveying the battlefield and giving orders to his troops. In the background, Napoleon is seen leading his troops in a desperate charge, attempting to turn the tide of the battle. This watercolour is believed to be the original design for Wellington's Victories plate 29, which was drawn and etched by William Heath, aquatinted by J.C. Stadler, and published by T.Tegg in April 1818. The Battle of Waterloo marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars and is considered one of the most significant battles in European history. This artwork provides a vivid and enduring record of this historic event.
