EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enchanting courtyard and pool of Bayt Shamiyya, also known as Maison Chamieh, located in the heart of Damascus, Syria. Built in 1863 by Antun Afandi al-Shami, a merchant and Spanish translator, the house replaced a less grand structure that had been destroyed by fire. By 1876, it had passed into the hands of Jibran Afandi Shamiya, a Christian delegate to the City Council. The photo, taken in 1918, depicts the riwaqs (arcades) and qaa (pool) of the house, adorned with intricate marble details. The serene courtyard is filled with the sounds of women in traditional Syrian costumes, their laughter and music adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The women are seen playing instruments such as the tambourine, adding to the lively ambiance. Bayt Shamiyya is situated on Zankat Bab Tuma, in the Christian Quarter of the old city. The house's Islamic-inspired architecture, with its elegant arches and columns, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Damascus, a city where various religious and ethnic groups have coexisted for centuries. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the past, and inviting us to imagine the stories and memories that have unfolded within the walls of this beautiful and historic house.
