EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing birds native to the Americas: the Bearded Bellbird (Procnias averano) and the Noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatus). The illustration, which is part of the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" by Frederic Cuvier, was produced in Paris, France. The Bearded Bellbird, also known as the Averano Bellbird, is depicted on the left side of the image. This bird is native to Central and South America, specifically in the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Basin. Known for its distinctive beard, this bird is a vibrant, iridescent green with a red belly and a long, curved beak. It is a fruit-eating bird and is known for its melodic, bell-like song. On the right side of the image, the Noisy Friarbird, also known as the Rufous-vented Chatterer or the Noisy Parrot-Friar, is depicted. This bird is native to Australia and New Guinea. It is a medium-sized bird with a distinctive appearance, featuring a black body, a rufous vent, and a yellow beak. The Noisy Friarbird is known for its loud, noisy calls and its omnivorous diet. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo in Paris. The engraving was executed by David and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and was published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art is a testament to the natural history of the time and showcases the intricacy and detail that was achievable through the copperplate stipple engraving technique.
