EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Harry Brodribb Irving (1870-1919) in the intense role of Mathias from Leopold Lewis's melodrama, "The Bells," first produced at the Lyceum Theatre in London in November 1871. Irving, the son of renowned actor Sir Henry Irving, made this role his own, becoming more closely identified with Mathias than any other. This production was part of a tour that also included "The Lyons Mail" and "Charles The First." Mathias, a man consumed by fear, is depicted here seated at a table, his face etched with worry and trepidation. The table is strewn with papers and documents, suggesting the weight of responsibility and the urgency of the situation that has driven him to this state of anxiety. The ominous title of the play, "The Bells," looms in the background, adding to the sense of foreboding and suspense. The production of "The Bells" reached distant venues, including the Londesborough Theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, in August 1908. The sepia-toned photograph, taken circa 1908, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to an Edwardian era of live theatre and captivating performances. Irving's portrayal of Mathias continues to resonate with audiences, a testament to the enduring power of the stage and the art of acting.
