EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.4, Plate 59, dates back to 1888. The artwork depicts two rare and endemic New Zealand birds: the Black Robin (Petroica (Miro) traversi) and the Chatham Island Warbler (Gerygone albofrontata). The Black Robin, also known as the Tarapunga, is a small, flightless, nocturnal bird that was once thought to be extinct. It was rediscovered in 1973 with only 26 individuals remaining. The Black Robin is characterized by its black plumage, short, curved beak, and distinctive white eye-ring. It is a member of the Petroicidae family, which is part of the Passeriformes order, also known as perching birds. The Chatham Island Warbler, also known as the Chatham Island Bellbird or the Chatham Island Sparrow, is a small, endemic passerine bird that is critically endangered. It is characterized by its white front, gray back, and distinctive yellow eyes. The Chatham Island Warbler is a member of the Gerygone genus, which is part of the Passeriformes order. Both of these birds are native to New Zealand and are considered national treasures. The Black Robin is the emblem of the New Zealand Department of Conservation, and the Chatham Island Warbler is the emblem of the Chatham Islands. The preservation of these birds and their habitats is of great importance to New Zealand's biodiversity and cultural heritage. This beautiful watercolor painting not only showcases the natural beauty of these birds but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
