EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases two magnificent waterfowl species: the Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) and the Wild Greylag Goose (Anser anser). The illustration was produced under the artistic direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, with the engraving executed by Massard and the painting by Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The Black Swan, depicted on the left, is a striking bird with its glossy black plumage, distinctive red eyes, and long, curved neck. Originally thought to be a mythical creature due to its absence in Europe, the Black Swan was first discovered in Australia in the late 17th century. This engraving captures the elegance and grace of this enigmatic bird, which is now found in various parts of the world. The Wild Greylag Goose on the right is a common and widespread species, native to Europe, Asia, and parts of North America. The goose is easily recognizable by its greyish-brown plumage, black head and neck, and pink bill with a black tip. The engraving beautifully portrays the goose's robust and sturdy appearance, which is well-suited to its semi-aquatic lifestyle. The intricate details of the feathers, the lifelike expressions of the birds, and the rich colors of the hand-painting make this engraving a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. This image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world as observed and documented by skilled artists and scientists over two centuries ago.
