Blind soldiers regatta at Putney, WW1

Blinded soldiers from St. Dunstans home for blinded sailor and soldiers in Regents Park, rowing in the boat they rowed to victory over the students of Westminster College. They won two races out of three. Previous to coaching for this regatta, none of the men had previously rowed before so their victory was all the more remarkable. A launch filled with other blind soldiers of St. Dunstans and their friends followed the race with enthusiastic cheering. The victorious crew pictured are from left to right, Private Steele (2nd Scottish Rifles), Private Millegan (Irish Guards), Gunner Bates (RHA) and Corporal Pettitt (Kings Royal Rifles). Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the indomitable spirit of blinded soldiers participating in the Blind Soldiers Regatta at Putney during World War I. The scene unfolds on the serene Thames River, where four brave men from St. Dunstan's Home for Blinded Sailors and Soldiers, previously unfamiliar with rowing, triumphantly row their boat to victory over the students of Westminster College. In this remarkable display of resilience and determination, Private Steele from the 2nd Scottish Rifles, Private Millegan of the Irish Guards, Gunner Bates of the Royal Horse Artillery, and Corporal Pettitt of the Kings Royal Rifles, demonstrate that disability does not hinder their ability to compete and excel. Their accomplishment was all the more impressive considering none of the men had prior rowing experience. The thrill of competition was not lost on their fellow soldiers and friends, who eagerly cheered them on from a nearby launch filled with other blind soldiers from St. Dunstan's Home. The date of this historic event was 1915, a time when the importance of rehabilitation and morale-boosting activities for soldiers was paramount. This photograph is a testament to the human spirit and the power of perseverance, showcasing the unwavering resolve of these brave men to overcome adversity and triumph against the odds.
