Bonzo meets a road hog by George Studdy

Bonzo (together with Chee-Kee, a Bonzoline pup and a black terrier) meets a road hog (actually a harmless little hedgehog). George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightful photograph, taken by renowned British illustrator George Ernest Studdy in September 1923, captures a charming encounter between Bonzo, the beloved small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, and a harmless little hedgehog, mistakenly referred to as a 'road hog' in the caption. Accompanied by Chee-Kee, a Bonzoline pup, and a black terrier, Bonzo's curiosity gets the better of him as he approaches the hedgehog, unaware of the prickly surprise that awaits him. Study's creation of Bonzo first graced the pages of The Sketch in 1922, and the Bonzo craze that ensued was unstoppable. Bonzo's popularity spread far and wide, resulting in an abundance of merchandise including postcards, annuals, toys, and more. This photograph is a testament to the playful and endearing nature of Bonzo and his companions, as they navigate the world around them with curiosity and innocence. The image, credited to the Estate of George Studdy, Gresham Marketing Ltd., and ILN, is a precious piece of history from the 1920s that continues to capture the hearts of dog lovers and collectors alike.
