EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken back in 1923, showcases Bransby Williams in his dual role as Micawber and Peggotty in the David Copperfield production by Walter Frederick Evelyn. The image, derived from Charles Dickens' renowned novel published between 1849 and 1850, was first brought to life on stage at the Lyceum Theatre on the 6th of April that year. Bransby Williams, born on the 14th of August, 1870, and passing away on the 3rd of December, 1961, was an accomplished actor who had previously showcased an extensive repertoire of Dickensian characters in the music halls. Micawber, the agile and resourceful Mr. Micawber, is depicted on the left, dressed in a top hat, a velvet collar, and a smart waistcoat. His knee is coiled with a rope, a prop that became synonymous with his character. On the right, we find Peggotty, the kind-hearted fisherman's wife, dressed in a simple yet practical outfit. Her hair is parted in the middle, and she wears a cap, adding to her humble yet endearing appearance. Bransby Williams' ability to embody both these contrasting characters in one production is a testament to his versatility and talent. The photograph, taken during the rehearsals or perhaps a performance, captures the essence of the characters and the actor's commitment to his craft. The waves of the Marcel wave hairstyle, popular during the early 20th century, adds a touch of authenticity to the image, further immersing us in the world of David Copperfield.
