EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph showcases the Breguet 690 bomber, which first took to the skies in March 1938. Initially designed as a close support bomber, this French aviation marvel entered service in late 1939, just as the clouds of war began to gather on the horizon. However, the Breguet 690's entry into military service came with a steep learning curve. Inexperienced crews, many of whom were still in training, were ill-prepared for the rigors of combat. As the German Blitzkrieg rolled across Europe in the spring of 1940, the Breguet 690s and their crews were thrown into the fray. Sadly, the results were disastrous. The aircraft, while technologically advanced for its time, proved to be no match for the superior German air force. The inexperience of the crews, combined with the complexities of the Breguet 690, led to a high loss rate. Despite these early setbacks, the Breguet 690 continued to serve in various roles throughout the Second World War. Its distinctive design, with its twin engines and distinctive fuselage, became a symbol of French aviation during this dark period in history. Today, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who flew these magnificent machines, and the lessons learned from the harsh realities of war."
