British bid for the Worlds non-stop flight record 1927

The Hawker Horsley (named after Sir Thomas Sopwiths home of Horsley Towers), was a British single-engined biplane bomber of the 1920s. It was the last all wooden aircraft built by Hawker Aircraft, and served as a medium day bomber and torpedo bomber with Britains Royal Air Force between 1926 and 1935. Pictured here, the Hawker Horsley attempting a non-stop flight to India, 4000 miles. Specially modified aircraft, carrying much more fuel, took off from RAF Cranwell on 20 May 1927, flown by Flight Lieutenants Roderick Carr and L.E.M Gillmann. Date: 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Hawker Horsley, a British single-engined biplane, embarks on an ambitious attempt to break the World's non-stop flight record to India. The Hawker Horsley, named after Sir Thomas Sopwith's estate Horsley Towers, was the last all-wooden aircraft produced by Hawker Aircraft. This historic biplane served as a medium day bomber and torpedo bomber in the Royal Air Force between 1926 and 1935. The date is 1927, and the scene unfolds at RAF Cranwell, where Flight Lieutenants Roderick Carr and L.E.M Gillmann prepare for takeoff in this specially modified Hawker Horsley. The aircraft has been outfitted with an impressive amount of fuel, necessary for the grueling 4,000-mile journey. The crew's goal is to surpass the existing record and etch their names in the annals of aviation history. The 1920s, a decade of innovation and progress, saw the aviation industry flourish. Biplanes, like the Hawker Horsley, were the epitome of engineering marvels during this era. This photograph serves as a testament to the daring spirit of the pilots and the ingenuity of the aircraft designers of the time. The Hawker Horsley's non-stop flight to India is a captivating chapter in the rich history of aviation. This photograph, with its evocative imagery and intriguing backstory, transports us back to an era of adventure, courage, and groundbreaking achievements.
