EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the spirit of camaraderie and athleticism during the British Mediterranean Fleet Sports Day held at the Ben-Marl Stadium in 1923. The stadium was a temporary structure, meticulously rigged up by the crews of HMS Benbow and HMS Marlborough of the 4th Battle Squadron. Named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, this formidable vessel was built at Devonport Royal Dockyard between 1912 and 1914 and entered service just prior to the First World War. After the war, Marlborough was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet and took part in significant historical events, including the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. The athletes in this photograph, dressed in their team uniforms, are engaged in a competitive yet friendly spirit, showcasing the diverse range of physical abilities and skills within the fleet.
