EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of triumph and relief in the heart of Africa during the First World War. Taken circa early March 1916, soon after the German surrender of Gama, Cameroon on 28 February 1916, the image shows four British soldiers standing proudly before a backdrop of African savannah. At the center, General Cunliffe, the commander of the British forces in Cameroon, wears the distinctive peaked helmet and pith helmet combination that was typical of British officers serving in the tropics. To his right, Major Wright and Lieutenant Cook, both clad in full military uniform, exchange a conversation. The identity of the soldier on the left, Lieutenant Colonel Briscet, is less certain, but his confident posture and smartly pressed uniform attest to his rank and military prowess. The British forces had faced a fierce resistance from the German garrison during their campaign to secure Cameroon, a strategically important German colony in west central Africa. The victory at Gama marked a significant turning point in the British efforts to expand their control over the region and secure their position in the global power struggle of the First World War. This photograph offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of war in Africa, where soldiers from both sides faced the challenges of extreme heat, disease, and unfamiliar terrain. Despite these hardships, the determination and resilience of the British soldiers shines through, making this image a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and triumphs of the First World War.
