Bugandan Royalty (card 1 of 2)
Card 1 of 2. The young King Daudi Cwa II of Uganda, seated on his elaborate golden throne (topped with a very British crown!), holding a staff of office, with his feet on a cheetah skin. Sir Daudi Cwa II, KCMG, KBE (1896 - 1939) was the King (kabaka) of Buganda from 1897 to 1939. On 14 August 1897, he succeeded Mwanga II as king of Buganda, a state in East Africa, which is now part of Uganda. A reformist, he initiated several significant changes in his kingdom, including a process of democratisation. After his death in 1939, he was succeeded by his son, Mutesa II, who went on to become the first president of Uganda. Daudi Cwa was baptized as a Protestant. " Daudi" is the Buganda language equivalent to " David"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the young and dynamic King Daudi Cwa II of Uganda, seated on his intricately designed golden throne adorned with a distinctive British crown. The regal figure, dressed in traditional attire, holds a staff of office with an air of authority. The king's feet rest on a cheetah skin, symbolizing his power and connection to nature. Born in 1896, Daudi Cwa II ascended to the throne of Buganda, a historic kingdom in East Africa, following the death of Mwanga II on August 14, 1897. As a reformist monarch, he introduced several significant changes to his kingdom, including a process of democratization. King Daudi Cwa II was a trailblazer in many ways. He was the first Bugandan king to be baptized as a Protestant and was knighted by the British monarchy, receiving the titles of KCMG (Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George) and KBE (Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire). Despite the British influence, Daudi Cwa II remained committed to preserving the traditions and culture of Buganda. His reign marked a period of transition as Buganda became part of the larger political entity known as Uganda. Tragically, King Daudi Cwa II passed away in 1939, leaving behind a rich legacy. He was succeeded by his son, Mutesa II, who went on to become the first president of independent Uganda. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the young king's leadership, vision, and enduring impact on African history.
