EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing reversal of a promotional postcard showcases the novelty element of a production of "What The Butler Saw" by E.F. Parry and Frederick Mouillot, first produced at Wyndham's Theatre on August 2, 1905. By 1907, the production had joined the touring repertoire of Lionel Rignold and Ada Blanche's company, playing at the Kennington Theatre. The image on the reverse side, meant to be viewed when the door of the postcard is opened, instructs the viewer to "Fix Both Eyes On The Hand, Then Lower The Head Down Until The Tip Of The Nose Rests On The Edge Of The Door." In a few seconds, the hand is promised to travel towards the parrot depicted in the illustration. The left side of the card features an advertisement for the popular theatrical entertainment, leaving only space for the recipient's name and address. This postcard is a captivating snapshot of the pantomime-like appeal of "What The Butler Saw" during the 1900s, offering a glimpse into the theatrical world of the past.
