A Butterfly on the Wheel,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a poignant and thought-provoking play by Edward G. Hammond and Francis Nelson, premiered at the esteemed Globe Theatre on 18th April 1911. Produced with arrangements by Charles Frohman, this theatrical masterpiece starred the illustrious Lewis Waller in the leading role. The title and image of the "butterfly on the wheel" metaphorically refer to the ordeal endured by the female character, whose fragile beauty and grace are contrasted against the harsh realities of life. The play, which first appeared on stage in London, later toured to the Opera House in Buxton on 23rd February 1914. The image of a blue butterfly with outstretched wings, delicately balanced on a spinning wheel, encapsulates the essence of the production. The lady, or butterfly, is caught in the unforgiving cycle of life, her fragility and vulnerability contrasting sharply with the relentless turning of the wheel. Lewis Waller, a renowned actor of the early 1900s, brought depth and nuance to his portrayal of the leading character. His performance was a testament to the power of the human spirit, even in the face of adversity. The play, with its poignant themes of love, loss, and the passage of time, resonated deeply with audiences and remains a significant work of the early 20th century. The image of "A Butterfly on the Wheel" is a striking reminder of the beauty and fragility of life, and the challenges that we all face as we navigate the complexities of the human experience. This evocative print, with its rich history and enduring symbolism, serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring power of the theatre to move, inspire, and captivate audiences.
