This still survives at the Museum today (2015), in the same position. In the corner of the far wall is standing the foreleg (bones) of an African elephant. To the right of that the glass of a large diorama has been partly screened. In addition to the patients, the two staff members of the VAD are Jack Hedge, Hospital Masseur and Clara Buss. There were fifteen beds in this room. The photograph was one of a number commissioned by Major Powell-Cotton from AH Siminson, photographer of St Lawrence, Ramsgate. It bears his embossing stamp in the bottom right corner. EDITORS COMMENTS
C Ward, Quex Park VAD Hospital: A Glimpse into Wartime Nursing and Recovery This evocative photograph captures the interior of C Ward at Quex Park VAD Hospital, a wartime facility located within the Powell-Cotton Museum in Birchington-on-Sea, England. Established in October 1914 and operational until January 1919, the hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, under the command of Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The fifteen beds in this ward, arranged in two rows, are filled with patients receiving care and attention from two dedicated Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) members. Jack Hedge, the hospital masseur, stands near the center, while Clara Buss, a VAD nurse, is positioned towards the left. The atmosphere is calm and focused, with the patients seemingly at ease amidst their surroundings. Behind the beds, a large glass case houses a taxidermy display of a fierce battle between a lion and a buffalo, a reminder of the natural world outside the hospital walls. The case, along with the covered diorama to the right, still survives at the Museum today. In the corner, the foreleg bones of an African elephant stand tall, adding to the exotic and otherworldly ambiance. The photograph was commissioned by Major Powell-Cotton from AH Siminson, a local Ramsgate photographer. The image, taken in 1917, offers a poignant glimpse into the daily life of a wartime hospital ward, where healing and recovery took place amidst the comforts and distractions provided by the unique surroundings of Quex Park VAD Hospital.
