EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning and intricately detailed print showcases three distinct species of shorebirds: the Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima), Wilson's Plover (Charadrius wilsonia), and a common Plover (Charadrius wilsonius), from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America." The double elephant folio, published between 1834 and 1835, is a testament to Audubon's unwavering dedication to capturing the natural world with unparalleled accuracy and beauty. The Purple Sandpiper, depicted in the foreground, is easily recognizable by its distinctive purple-tinged collar, a feature that sets it apart from other sandpipers. Its bill, curved and slender, is perfectly adapted for probing the sand and mud for food. The Wilson's Plover, in the middle ground, is shown in its elegant, wading stance, with its long, pointed bill and slender legs. The common Plover, in the background, is blending in seamlessly with the rocks, demonstrating its excellent camouflage. This print was produced using the aquatint technique, a labor-intensive process that involved engraving the metal plate with tiny dots and then applying a ground, which held the ink in the recesses of the plate. The plate was then hand-coloured, adding another layer of depth and vibrancy to the image. The birds are depicted in their natural habitat, outside, during daytime. The daytime setting allows for the intricacies of their feathers and anatomy to be fully appreciated, while the rocky shoreline provides a fitting backdrop for these agile and adaptable birds. This print is a true masterpiece of natural history and artistic expression, a must-have for any avian enthusiast or collector.
