EDITORS COMMENTS
North Africa, 1919: Flesh-and-Blood Camels Alarmed by the Iron Horse This evocative photograph captures a moment of transition in the transportation history of North Africa, as the traditional camel caravans are confronted by the modern marvel of the iron horse. The image, taken in 1919, shows a group of camels huddled together, their eyes wide with alarm as a train passes by in the background. The train, a symbol of progress and modernity, is a stark contrast to the ancient and time-honored method of transporting goods and people across the desert. The camels, with their humped backs and long, curved necks, have been the primary mode of transportation in North Africa for thousands of years. They are well-adapted to the harsh desert conditions, able to go long periods without water and carry heavy loads. But the advent of the railroad, represented by the iron horse in this photograph, was changing the way goods were transported across the region. The train, with its powerful engine and iron rails, was faster and more efficient than the camel caravans. It could carry larger quantities of goods and people, and was not affected by the same environmental challenges as the camels. The railroad also opened up new opportunities for trade and commerce, connecting North Africa to the rest of the world in a way that was not possible before. Despite the advantages of the iron horse, the camels continued to play an important role in North African transportation for many years to come. They were still used for short distances and in areas where the railroad did not reach. But this photograph serves as a reminder of the moment when the old ways of transportation began to give way to the new, and the world became a little smaller as a result.
