Captain Charles Upham

Portrait of double VC winner, Captain Charles Upham (). Born in New Zealand, Upham was a sheep farmer who distinguished himself during World War Two on two occasions. On July 14th/15th 1942, Captain Upham led an attack on a strong enemy position at El Ruweisat Ridge in the Western Desert. Despite being wounded in one arm, he destroyed a tank and several guns and vehicles, returning to his company after his wound was dressed and remaining with them until he was severely wounded and captured. Previous to that in May 1941, he had won the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry during operations in Crete. He is one of only three men to have won the Victoria Cross and Bar since its institution in 1856. The other two, Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake and Captain Noel Chavasse are also included in this picture

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and poignant print captures the heroic figure of Captain Charles Upham, a double Victoria Cross winner hailing from New Zealand. A sheep farmer turned war hero, Upham's bravery and leadership shone through during World War Two on two separate occasions. In July 1942, despite being wounded in one arm, Captain Upham fearlessly led an attack on a strong enemy position at El Ruweisat Ridge in the Western Desert. He single-handedly destroyed a tank and several guns and vehicles before returning to his company after having his wound dressed. His unwavering courage continued until he was severely wounded and captured by the enemy. Prior to this incredible feat, Upham had already been awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during operations in Crete in May 1941. He is one of only three men to have received both the Victoria Cross and Bar since its inception in 1856, alongside Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake and Captain Noel Chavasse - who are also featured in this historic picture. This image serves as a reminder of Upham's remarkable achievements and selfless sacrifice for his country, immortalizing him as a true symbol of courage and resilience amidst adversity.
