The image, titled "Captain Cook, by M. Smith," is a testament to Cook's unyielding spirit of discovery and his significant contributions to the world of cartography and exploration. Born in Yorkshire, England, in 1728, Cook joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional seamanship skills and keen understanding of navigation. In 1768, Cook embarked on his first major voyage aboard the HMS Endeavour, with instructions to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti. Tragically, Cook was killed during an encounter with the Hawaiian people on the island of Hawaii in 1779.
