EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Captain Cuthbert Julian Orde and Lady Eileen Orde, both accomplished artists, are seen at work in their Chelsea studio, surrounded by the creative chaos that comes with the artistic process. The image, taken in 1925, captures the couple in the prime of their careers, with their two young daughters, Doonie and Jane, playfully present in the scene. Captain Orde, born in 1888, was a decorated World War I pilot and a long-serving secretary of the Royal Automobile Club. However, it was his artistic talents that truly set him apart. He gained widespread recognition for his portraits of Battle of Britain pilots during World War II, immortalizing the courage and determination of these brave men in paint. Lady Eileen Orde, born in 1887, was the daughter of the 4th Duke of Wellington. Her artistic pursuits were just as diverse as her illustrious lineage. She produced advertisements for the fashion designer Elspeth Phelps, created intricate wallpaper designs, and specialized in fabric painting on dresses and fans. Her artistic abilities were not limited to the visual arts, as she also penned a number of articles and stories for various publications. The Orde family's studio was a creative haven, where ideas flowed freely and the boundaries between work and family life were blurred. The photograph offers a glimpse into their world, revealing the passion, dedication, and joy that fueled their artistic endeavors. The presence of their daughters, Doonie and Jane, adds a touch of innocence and wonder to the scene, emphasizing the intergenerational impact of artistic inspiration.
