Captain Scotts Departure for Antarctica

Two photographs reporting the departure of Captain Scott and his team on board the Terra Nova, bound for Antarctica where they would attempt to reach the South Pole first. Top picture shows the crew on board waving to those they were leaving behind. The bottom picture shows the Siberian ponies taken by Scott to haul supplies. Scotts predominant use of ponies and motor sledges over dogs (used by the successful Norwegian, Amundsen) is cited as one of the reasons Scott failed in his attempt to reach the South Pole first. Date: 1911

Antarctic Antarctica Crew Departing Departure Exploration Explorer Explorers Leaving Nova Polar Pole Ponies Scott Siberian Terra

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his intrepid team bid farewell to their loved ones as they prepared to embark on the Terra Nova, bound for the frozen expanse of Antarctica and an historic attempt to reach the South Pole first. In the top photograph, the crew members are seen waving from the deck of the ship as they departed from the shores of New Zealand, leaving behind their families and friends. The Terra Nova, equipped with a combination of motor sledges and Siberian ponies, was the means by which Scott planned to transport the necessary supplies for the arduous journey. However, Scott's reliance on ponies and motor sledges, as opposed to the successful use of dogs by his Norwegian rival, Roald Amundsen, would later be cited as one of the reasons for the failure of Scott's expedition. The ponies, while effective in transporting heavy loads over short distances, struggled in the extreme cold and ice conditions of Antarctica. Moreover, the motor sledges frequently broke down, leaving the team to rely on manpower and the ponies for transportation. The bottom photograph shows the Siberian ponies that were taken aboard the Terra Nova for the expedition. These ponies, along with the team's determination and perseverance, would ultimately prove insufficient in the face of the harsh Antarctic conditions. The date of this photograph is 1911, and the image serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and sacrifices made by the brave explorers who sought to conquer the last great unknown on our planet.
