Caricature of Augustus Harris, British actor and dramatist
Caricature of Augustus Harris (1852-1896), British actor, dramatist and impresario, transformed into a goose -- Not " Old Mother Goose" but Master Augoosetus. Goose Clubs were popular in Victorian Britain, allowing even the poorest to save a few pennies a week so that they could buy a goose for their Christmas dinner. Harris was manager of the Drury Lane Theatre, London, from 1879, where he co-wrote and produced many pantomimes.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature depicts Augustus Harris, a renowned British actor, dramatist, and impresario, in an extraordinary transformation as Master Augoosetus, a goose. The image is a playful take on the popular Victorian tradition of Goose Clubs, where individuals from all walks of life saved a few pennies each week to purchase a goose for their Christmas dinner. Augustus Harris, known for his contributions to the Drury Lane Theatre in London since 1879, is shown with an elongated neck and beak, embodying the essence of a goose. This whimsical caricature, created in 1880, is a delightful mixture of man and bird, showcasing the artistic flair of the 1880s. Harris's tenure at Drury Lane Theatre was marked by his co-writing and production of numerous pantomimes. This caricature, however, is not related to the company of actors or commercial use, but rather a lighthearted representation of the popular Goose Club phenomenon that was an integral part of Victorian society. The cartoon's creators, Alfred Bryan and Terry Parker, skillfully blended the human form with that of a goose, resulting in a visually striking and humorous image. Master Augoosetus, with his long beak and human features, is a testament to the artistic ingenuity and creativity of the Victorian era.
