EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature, created in 1882, humorously depicts Captain Sir Eyre Massey Shaw, the illustrious Superintendent of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (now the London Fire Brigade). Shaw is shown here in his distinctive uniform, complete with helmet, surrounded by a cloud of smoke and a group of eager firemen. The scene takes place during an intermission at a Victorian theatre, a time when fire risks were a significant concern. Theatres in the 1880s were notorious for their fire hazards. Flammable materials, such as curtains, velvet upholstery, and gas lighting, were commonly used. In addition, theatres often lacked proper fire safety regulations and adequate firefighting equipment. As a result, theatre fires were a frequent occurrence, with devastating consequences. Captain Shaw, a pioneer in fire safety, was a tireless advocate for improving fire safety measures in London's theatres. He lobbied for the implementation of stricter regulations, including the installation of fire escapes, fire alarms, and fireproof materials. His efforts paid off, and by the end of the 1880s, significant progress had been made in reducing the risk of theatre fires. Despite the progress, the caricature serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and continued efforts to ensure the safety of London's theatres and its patrons. Shaw's legacy lives on, and his commitment to fire safety continues to inspire and protect generations to come.
