Caricature of Richard Claude Belt (1851-1920), English sculptor -- Law Court Pantomime. Mr Policeman Lewis to Mr Motley Belt. A libel case between Belt and a former employer, Charles Lawes, ran for six months in 1882, over the disputed credit for a sculpture. Belt won the case and was awarded damages of 5000, but Lawes launched an appeal and the damages were reduced to 500. However, the Court of Appeal overturned this in 1884, and reinstated the amount to 5000.

The policeman here is Sir George Henry Lewis (1833-1911), lawyer for Charles Lawes, so annoyed at losing the case that he pursued and ruined Belt.
