EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming cartoon captures the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, in a playful moment during the late Victorian era. The Prince, born in 1841, was the eldest son of Queen Victoria, who was known for her strong-willed nature and reluctance to share power. As a result, the Prince was largely excluded from any serious political involvement. The image shows the Prince engrossed in play with his toys, surrounded by an array of colorful objects. The cartoonist's satirical touch is evident in the exaggerated expression on the Prince's face, as well as the caption that reads "The Prime Minister's Business." This humorous commentary highlights the public perception of the Prince as a frivolous and childish figure, in contrast to the responsibilities of government and politics. Despite his limited involvement in politics during his mother's reign, the Prince's influence would eventually come to the forefront when he ascended to the throne in 1901. His reign, known as the Edwardian era, was marked by social and cultural changes, including an increase in consumerism and the arts. This cartoon serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between the monarchy and the public during the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods, as well as the enduring power of satire to comment on the political and social issues of the time.
